ABOUT US





Since its foundation, the Budapest-based Weiner Ensemble has made it their mission to broaden the repertoire of this special instrumentation, the so-called pierrot ensemble formation, as well as introducing it to a wider audience. The repertoire of the ensemble contains music from solo pieces of the baroque era to the 21st century, contemporary ensemble compositions by collaborating with the youngest generation of composers. They aim to find ways to recreate the orchestral sound as a chamber formation to create new sounds for their ensemble by transcribing and commissioning new works.


Continuing their mission, in the year 2024, they will appear on the concert scene with a concert programme entitled Schönberg in a New Perspective, a programme of transcriptions of works by Arnold Schönberg, in relation to the Schönberg Memorial Year. A CD recording of the concert programme is also being produced with funding from the Hungarian Cultural Fund.


In 2023, the Weiner Ensemble created their own contemporary music education programme called COnteMPASS Workshop, which aims to introduce the history and language of the development of contemporary music through the works of present-day Hungarian composers to students studying at the secondary level of music education. The programme reached 700+ students from eleven institutions and was made possible with the support of the Society Artisjus.


In 2016, the Weiner Ensemble won 3rd prize at the prestigious Orlando International Chamber Music Competition at Kerkrade, the Netherlands. Thanks to the result the ensemble had the opportunity to perform at the Orlando Festival in the Netherlands and took part in the masterclasses of Henk Guittart, James Austin Smith, Alan R. Kay and the Lafayette Quartet.


The Weiner Ensemble was established from final year and doctorate students of the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in September, 2014 under the supervision of professor Márta Gulyás. As a gesture of respect for Leó Weiner's work as a composer and chamber music teacher, the ensemble was named after him.



Réka Baksai



Violinist





Réka Baksai is a doctoral student at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music and from 2014 September she is a member of Concerto Budapest Symphony Orchestra. Beside the orchestral work Réka is an active chamber musician as well, she is a founder member of the Weiner Ensemble and Classicus String Quartet.


At the last half decade Réka has won several prizes at international competitions for instance at the T.I.M. International Competition (3rd prize) and at the Summa Cum Laude Internation Music Festival in Austria, where she received 1st prize as a member of the Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra.


Réka has developed her skills at numerous masterclasses with artists such as Gyula Stuller, Katalin Sebestyén, Simon Standage and Kristóf Baráti.




janka balogh-jámbor



Cellist





Janka Balogh-Jámbor is an active soloist and chamber musician. At the age 14 she was accepted to the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music as an exceptional young talent student. She has received her diplomas from the Academies in Budapest (with Prof. László Mező) and in Berlin (with Prof. Wolfgang Boettcher). Furthermore, Janka received her DLA degree in 2023 at the Liszt Ferenc Academy.


A prizewinner of numerous international competitions, including Concorso Europeo International Cello Competition (Gorizia, Italy) and the David Popper International Cello Competition (Hungary).


Janka was the member of the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (2013-2015) and the European Union Youth Orchestra (2012-2013). Janka took part at International Orchestra Institute in Attergau and the Encuentro de Música y Academia de Santander Festival, where she had opportunity to play with musicians such as Corinne Chapelle, Natacha Kudritskaya and Marco Rizzi.


Between 2020-2022 Janka was a guest lecturer of cello at the Faculty of Music at University of Szeged.




annamária sziroczák-bán



Flutist





Annamária Sziroczák-Bán studied flute with Ákos Dratsay at the Kodály School in Kecskemét and graduated from the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest in the class of Dániel Tősér and Zoltán Gyöngyössy.


His main artistic activity is teaching at the Patrona Hungariae Catholic School and the Béla Bartók Secondary Music School. His pupils regularly participate with success in national and international competitions in solo and chamber music.


Annamária can be heard regularly in Budapest concert halls, mainly with contemporary chamber music. She joined the Weiner Ensemble in 2023.



MÁté bán



Flutist





Máté Bán is one of the most versatile flutists of his generation. He has won numerous first prizes in solo and chamber music competitions in Hungary and abroad.


Between 2022 and 2023 he held the position of Deputy Principal Flute of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Leipzig. Previously, he has been a member of the Concerto Budapest, the Hungarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra.


Máté is an active chamber musician as well. He is a member of the Ludium Ensemble, a founding member of Musiciennes Libres, the Weiner Ensemble, the Fuga Trio, and Flute Forum Hungary. He regularly makes transcriptions for his instrument and chamber ensembles as well.


Máté won first prize at the International Flute Festival in Sieradz (Poland, 2009) and the Friedrich Kuhlau International Flute Competition in the duo category with Lívia Duleba in Uelzen (Germany, 2011).


Between 2015-2017, Máté was a lecturer at the flute studio of the University of Debrecen Music Faculty.


He graduated at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest in 2015. Currently, Máté is a candidate for the DLA program of the Liszt Ferenc Academy’s Doctoral School. He is writing his doctoral dissertation on the development of the Böhm flute in Hungary.



IMRE DANI



Pianist





Recognized for his inspired performances and great virtuosity, Hungarian pianist Imre Dani has received his diploma with honors at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest, Hungary. During his academic studies, Imre was a student of Prof. Balázs Szokolay and András Kemenes.


Imre has won numerous grants and prizes at competitions. In 2011 he won the Yamaha Scholarship in Budapest and he won the first prize in the 21st International Johannes Brahms Competition Pörtschach in 2014. In 2013 Imre won the Hungarian National Ernst Dohnányi Chamber Music Competition in Debrecen with Eszter Karasszon and Eszter Király. Imre improved his playing at the masterclasses of Dmitri Bashkirov, Evgeni Koroliov, Malcolm Bilson, and Péter Nagy.


Imre gave several solo concerts in Budapest, Wien, Weimar, and Graz. Besides his solo recitals, Imre is an active chamber musician as well, founder member of the Weiner Ensemble and member of the Ludium Ensemble.



Csaba pálfi



Clarinetist





Csaba Pálfi is a versatile clarinetist, active as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral performer. He is a co-founder of the Weiner Ensemble and principal bass clarinetist of the Hungarian State Opera Orchestra.


In addition to his performances with the chamber ensemble, he had the opportunity to perform on international stages, including the Encuentro de Música de Santander, Aldeburgh Music Festival, and Orlando Festival. At these illustrious events, he performed with remarkable musicians such as Wolfram Christ, Hansjörg Schellenberger, Radovan Vlatković, Felix Renggli, and Nicholas Daniels.


Csaba Pálfi is Assistant Professor of Clarinet at the Liszt Ferenc Academy of Music in Budapest. In addition to his educational duties, Csaba has given masterclasses in Italy, Spain, Japan, and South Korea. Furthermore, he is a regular guest lecturer at the New Millennium International Chamber Music Festival.


He continued his academic journey with doctoral studies at the Doctoral School of the Liszt Academy of Music, graduating summa cum laude in 2018.


Csaba Pálfi is an official Yamaha Artist and ambassador of JLV Sounds.
